Surviving the Hurricane

Greetings everyone. Linnea and I would like to thank you for your prayers. Both the earthquake and hurricane had very little effect on us or our ministry. However we did  how rain and wind from the storm, but no lose of power.
Our recent fellowship Sunday went well, with an attendance of 9. That 9 included a 3 month old baby. As with all of our fellowship Sundays, we had great fellowship around God's Word as well as a good spread of food.
Please pray for our new Bible Studies starting this Thursday. Linnea has one young lady that has promised to attend for the ladies study. This young lady is one that the Lord allowed us to introduce her to the Lord. I have one gentleman that I am working with in hopes that he will come to the men's study on Thursday. Please pray for him (J.L.) I am still not sure if he is saved.
We will also start our Sign Classes again this coming Sunday, so if you live locally and would like to come, please do.

Fellowship Sunday

Well, it is Monday morning and we made it through the weekend. With it being such a good weekend it was easier to make it through it. Saturday morning I was able to do breakfast with a deaf preacher from Silver Spring, MD. He was on his way back home from Hagerstown. He had just dropped his son off at a local church that was taking a bus to Bill Rice Ranch for the week. He and I were able to sit and talk for about 3 1/2 hours. It was encouraging.

Sunday went well. The last Sunday of the month we do a "Fellowship Sunday". We have the service at our apartment and then do some kind of meal afterwards. Yesterday, including the baby, we had 10 people. I had one deaf friend respond to my Tweet by saying that "10 people in a deaf church is like having 100 in a hearing church."

Back at the Post

I am back from my long break from blogging. Linnea and i are enjoying a great day here in Frederick, MD. Blue sky and about 40 degrees. However yesterday we got about 4 inches of snow. Our church is doing well.

One thing I am learning is that verbal communication with Linnea is becoming harder. Perhaps one of the most frustrating things i am dealing with is the trouble I am having in communicating verbally with Linnea. I know at some point I will need her to start signing all the time. Not sure if she is ready for that.

Being Deaf, what does it really mean?

A little background on myself. In 1981 I took my first ASL class. While in high school I befriend a young man who was deaf. Due to this friendship I decided to take the ASL classes. Since then I have worked with the deaf in various ways. However since around 1995, I started noticing my hearing was becoming worse and harder to use. Since that time I have become deaf myself.
During this time I have come to realize that deafness is more than a physical limit. It comes with a certain way of thinking as well. There is also a culture and a way of life that is connected to it. I am also there is a division in the way people look at the deaf world, both in the secular and religious worlds.
